Pedro García López is a professor in the Department of Computer Engineering and Mathematics at Universitat Rovira i Virgili(Spain), where he leads the Cloud and Distributed Systems Lab (CloudLab).
He has extensive experience coordinating European research projects, including AIStars4EU (2027–2030), CloudStars (2023–2027), NearData (2023–2025), and CloudSkin (2023–2025), and participated as a partner in EXTRACT (2023–2025). He previously coordinated FP7 CloudSpaces (2013–2015), H2020 IOStack (2015–2017), and H2020 CloudButton (2019–2022).
From 2019 to 2020, he was a visiting scientist in the Hybrid Clouds group at IBM Watson Research, focusing on serverless technologies. His research interests span distributed systems, cloud computing, data analytics, artificial intelligence, software architectures, and middleware.
He has published more than 100 papers in journals and leading conferences, including ACM Middleware, IEEE ICDCS, USENIX ATC, USENIX FAST, ACM SIGMOD, SOCC, ICDE, and IMC. He has served on the programme committees of numerous international conferences, including Middleware, ICDCS, SoCC, CCGrid, CloudCom, CIC, P2P, CLOSER, and WETICE. He is currently co-organising the International Workshop on AI and Serverless (WoAIS) and he is General Chair of Middleware 2026 Conference in Tarragona.
Outside academia, his main passions are science fiction and philosophy. An avid reader, he regularly shares his reading list on X (@pedrotgn). In 2024, he completed a master’s degree in Philosophy at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), with a thesis titled “Foucault and Digital Technologies of Power: Studying Resistance as Decentralization.” He also enjoys what he jokingly calls “lazy sports”: skiing, where gravity does the work; windsurfing, where the wind takes over; and table tennis, where precision is everything. Swimming rounds out the list, although it requires doing the work himself.
